Use 2 Middle Referees, Malaysia Cup Final So Unique
VIVA - Malaysia Cup final in 1999 used two middle referees. At the meeting, Brunei Darussalam defeated Sarawak FA with a score of 2-1.
The final match is still a unique thing until now. Because, for the first time the Malaysian public saw a football match led directly by two referees in the middle of the field.
What's more, before the match started controversy. Both teams wanted the match to be held in the Borneo Islands, but the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) refused because they were afraid that only a small number of spectators would be present directly at the stadium.
Quoting Sebuah Bola, one of the referees on duty, Amir Sharifuddin Wong gave an explanation of this unique moment. He said, at that time FAM was chosen by FIFA to conduct trials using two middle referees in a match.
Although there are two middle referees, Amir said there was no difference in duties. Both still have the right to blow the whistle of a violation, depending on who is close to the scene.
"It depends on the location of the referee. Both referees are free to move, while the assistant referee (line judge) remains on duty as usual," Amir said.
"Typically the referee who is close to the game will continue to move to follow it. While the other referee will move to an empty spot, or the position is expected to the ball will lead there," he added.
Amir added, the policy of using the two middle referees had a positive impact. Players are not careless in committing offenses.
"The decision is good for disciplining players not to infringe too often in matches," he said.
