Olympics postponed, FIFA gives concessions about U-23 players
VIVA - The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was officially postponed a year due to the corona virus pandemic. Originally planned to be held July 24 - August 9 2020, now postponed to July 23 - August 8, 2021.
This condition certainly has a direct effect on the branch of football. Because, regulations say this event is followed by U-23 players plus three senior players.
The problem is, with a one year delay the player's age automatically increases. Players who should be able to appear this year will turn 24 in the coming year.
In this regard, FIFA provides leeway. They maintain the rules of players born after January 1, 1997 can appear at the Olympics. That is, players who are 24 years old can still participate.
"Considering postponed Olympic soccer (qualification and final tournament): maintaining initial regulation (players born on or after January 1, 1997 and three senior players)," said a statement on FIFA's official website.
On the same occasion, FIFA also gave an announcement about international tournaments affected by the corona virus. Two Women's World Cup tournaments in this year's age category were postponed. No international matches will be played in June.
